Papers, 1799-1841.

A small collection of papers of Henry Sargent, including his commission and orderly book kept by Sargent as adjutant for the U.S. 14th Infantry Regiment from 1 June 1799 - 2 March 1800. The book contains general, brigade, and regimental level orders regarding rules and regulations established by the War Dept., organization of brigades, courts-martial, and general procedures for the regiment camped at Oxford, Mass. Other papers include commissions as an aide-de-camp for various Mass. governors; documents related to his role in receiving the surrender by the British of Moose, Frederick, and Dudley Islands off the coast of Maine after the War of 1812; a few items regarding his patent for a single-rail railway; and a few misc. items regarding his paintings. Correspondents include Alden Bradford.
